How long is long enough to wait on the Lord? Abraham and Sarah left family, land and everything that was familiar on a promise from God. They ventured into foreign lands and exposed themselves to many dangers. They waited for more than 20 years for the promise to be fulfilled. Ten years into their waiting they began to wonder whether God still remembered his promise and they came up with plan B. Sarah offered her slave Hagar to Abraham so that Abraham could have the long awaited heir through her. Abraham and Sarah thought their plan B had worked. Ishmael was born through Hagar and they were hoping that God would approve their plan B. Ten years later, today’s first reading, God visits Abraham and lets him know that God’s promise is about to be fulfilled. God lets Abraham and Sarah know that their plan is not God’s plan. How long is long enough to wait on the Lord?
It is hard to hold on to a promise of God when we do not see results, when things do not go according to what we hope for. However, our fundamental call is to faithfulness, not success. Do I stop being a person of faith and hope, love and compassion when I do not see the results I hoped and longed for? Our call is to become citizens of God’s Kingdom and to grow a heart according to the values and priorities of this Kingdom. Actions and results are important, but we will ultimately be judged on the kind of person we become. Abraham and Sarah came up with plan B and they hoped God would approved it, but they did not close themselves up when finally God decided to fulfill His promise. How long is long enough to wait on the Lord? If we focus on the person we are called to become rather than on the end result of the promise I suppose the answer is: a life time.
The story says that both Abraham and Sarah laughed when God revealed to them that by this time next year Sarah would have the long awaited child. Abraham laughed, perhaps in recognizing God’s sense of humor. In his old age he would be a father again, this time with Sarah. Sarah, on the other hand, laughed because she thought God was playing a joke on her. Or perhaps it was nervous laughter since she overheard the conversation in secret. Perhaps, in that nervous laughter she doubted herself and her body. It is quite common to impose on God the limits of our faith, hope and imagination. Perhaps our crisis of faith is nothing more than a crisis of the imagination. If we cannot imagine what we can become, then how can we hold on to hope, to what is possible? How long is long enough to wait on the Lord: a life time?
¿Cuánto tiempo es suficiente para esperar en el Señor? Abraham y Sara dejaron familia, tierra y todo lo que era familiar para ellos por la promesa de Dios. Se aventuraron a tierras lejanas y se expusieron a muchos peligros. Esperaron más de 20 años el cumplimiento de la promesa de Dios. Díez años en su espera empezaron a dudar si Dios cumpliría su promesa y decidieron crear su propio plan en caso de que Dios no cumpliera el suyo. Sara le da a Abraham a su sierva Agar para que por medio de ella puedan tener un hijo. Abraham y Sara pensaban que le habían dado una manita a Dios con su plan. Ismael nace de Agar y ellos esperan que Dios apruebe lo que han hecho. Díez años más tarde, en la lectura de hoy, Dios visita a Abraham y le revela que su promesa está por cumplirse. Dios les hace ver que el plan de ellos nos el plan de Dios. ¿Cuánto tiempo es suficiente para esperar en el Señor?
Es un reto esperar en la promesa de Dios cuando no vemos resultados, cuando las cosas no salen como esperamos. Sin embargo, nuestra vocación fundamental es a la fidelidad, y no al excito. ¿Hemos de dejar de ser personas de fe y esperanza, de amor y compasión cuando no vemos los resultados deseados y esperados? Nuestra llamada es de ser ciudadanos del Reino de Dios y crecer un corazón de acuerdo a los valores y prioridades de Reino. La acción y resultados son importantes, pero a últimas seremos juzgados por la persona que somos. Abraham y Sara crearon un plan de “por si acaso Dios no cumple” y esperaban que Dios les aceptara este plan, pero no se aferraron a él porque aceptaron la voluntad de Dios cuando finalmente cumplió su promesa. ¿Cuánto tiempo es suficiente para esperar en el Señor? Si nos enfocamos en la persona que somos llamados a ser en vez de solo en resultados quizás la respuesta a la pregunta es: toda una vida.
La narración dice que tanto Abraham como Sara sonrieron cuando Dios les revela que para esas fechas el próximo año Sara tendrá el niño tanto deseado. Abraham sonríe, quizás al darse cuenta del sentido de humor de Dios. En su vejes Abraham será padre de nuevo, esta vez con Sara. Sara también sonríe pero porque piensa que Dios le está jugando una broma. O Quizás Sara sonríe de nervios porque escucha la conversación de Abraham en secreto. Quizás la sonrisa nerviosa de Sara manifiesta duda de si misma y de su cuerpo. Es muy común transferir a Dios las dudas y límites de nuestra fe, esperanza e imaginación. Quizás a lo que llamamos crisis de fe no es nada más que una crisis de la imaginación. Si no podemos imaginar lo que podemos llegar a ser, ¿cómo entonces hemos de sostener la esperanza de lo que podemos llegar a ser? ¿Cuánto tiempo es suficiente para esperar en el Señor?
